Browe after 3 minutes of adult play December 27, 2008 I sat up late the day after Christmas setting this toy up for my 3 year old. I inserted 3 different pages and then bam...the toy would no longer recognize a page existed in the holder. I reset the toy, I powered it off and inserted new batteries...nothing worked. This is the second V-tech toy I have purchased that didn't work right after out of the box. It seems hit or miss for quality of these toys, either get a great one or get one that you have to go through the hassle of returning. If you have the time to mess with it, I guess go ahead and purchase and see if you are lucky!
Does not teach correct writing August 27, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This toy was a huge disappointment for my 4 yr old. We wanted someting he could sit and do himself like in the commercial, but small children will still need parental help with most pages and my son gets extremely bored after one page and is done and does not want to try any other. They advertise it for travel, but with all the pages going everywhere, having to sort through them to find the one you want, plus needing the cartridge, that seems ridiculous. Too many pieces. The main thing we wanted was to help him practice writing his letters and numbers. You are better off with plain paper and a pencil. The pen doesn't usually read the whole stroke, so it says "try again" even though you did it right, and the stroke order of 4 letters and 1 number is WRONG, not the way he was taught to write, so it tells you you are wrong. Now he just turned 5, and he received a leapster and plays with it constantly. Don't waste money or time on this.
Cool Toy August 13, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The VTech Whiz Kid is a pretty neat toy. My two year old has this toy and has learned quite a bit from it. Depending on which games you purchase for it (she mainly uses what came with it) the levels go from easy to harder. She enjoys playing all of the differnt games, counting apples, doing colors. She understands pretty much all of them, and you can even download onto the computer so parents can review their progress. I would recommend keeping all of the excess pages away from a child this small, because once they become bent and beaten up, they don't seem to work as great. Overall, i'd recommend it to others.
My 3 yr old son loves this! July 31, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought this for my son for Christmas last year (2007). He played with it for a while. But, then it sat without being played with. He turned 3 in March. NOW all of a sudden, over the past month or so, he can't get enough of it! I think it was a bit beyond his comprehension before. But, now he plays with it every day. It was well worth the money if you ask me. Oh - and we haven't had ANY technical difficulties with it at all. It works great. As a matter of fact, I think I've only replaced ONE set of batteries in it in nearly 9 months.
Age recommendation: 4-6, not 3-6 July 26, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The Whiz Kid unit itself comes with a pretty cool learning CD called "Wondertown," but the CD set it comes with is more like a survey of activities for kids ranging anywhere from 3-6. Some of the activities are:
-You have 2 one-dollar-bills and you go to a snack machine with prices on the snacks. What can you buy? -Telling time. -Giving you a picture like a boat, you have the word "b _ _ t," and the child is supposed to choose the right vowel combination (oa, oo, ee, ea) to make that word -Tracing numbers, letters, and pictures (which is one of the activities appopriate for my preschooler) -Nursery rhymes and stories. Your child is following the story, pretending to act out that particular motion on the page (like stirring a bowl would have a picture of a bowl and the child is making circles with the pen).
I really think if you are buying this toy you should buy the age-specific books to go with it. The Whiz Kid is very cool but most activities are too hard for a 3-year-old. We bought two Pre-K CDs for it and they are much more appropriate for him but I still feel this should be age-rated at 4+.
I think the Wondertown activities are better than the themed activities that are the Pre-K/K CDs (like Thomas, Bob the Builder, Spiderman, Dora). It's a shame they didn't sell the Whiz Kid for slightly less with no books included, and created Wondertowns for each age group and sold them separately. JMO.
It's definitely better than other Vtech products. Normally I despise Vtech with a passion and bought this based on the good reviews. I am not disappointed.
